What you need to know for an enjoyable trip
The rental boats from Alykes can easily reach the Blue Caves which are 6 nautical miles away. En route you will pass the deep blue sea of Lithari, Xigia, Makris Gialos and Mikro Nisi where you can stop for a cold beer or food at a traditional taverna by the sea. You will also pass by the port of Agios Nikolaos and many small beaches which are only accessible by boat.
When you hire the boat it has 20€ of petrol which is more than enough to reach the lighthouse in Skinari and back again to Alykes. To reach the shipwreck you will need twice as much fuel.
The area surrounding the shipwreck is rocky and subject to sudden wind changes which could overturn the boat, therefore it is recommended only for experienced drivers or on calm days when we have informed you it is safe.
The condition of the boat and its engine must be returned in the same state as it was rented. Any damage or loss will be covered by you the renter.
Driving Information
Drive at a distance of 200-300 meters away from the coast paying attention to the rocks.
Approach the beach with care, ensuring the propeller does not go to ground and drop anchor in water of at least one metre and never pull the boat on the shore.
Also when dropping anchor ensure there are no rocks below where the anchor could get stuck.
Make regular stops in order to rest the engine but do not shut the throttle.
When entering caves, turn off the engine and use the paddles and lower the canvas.
Be careful of large vessels approaching as the back wash can be dangerous.
When the sea is calm in Alykes you may see Caretta Caretta (the loggerhead sea turtles) and dolphins close to the Blue caves.
