Zakynthos is an island with beautiful beaches, traditional villages and idyllic countryside with scenic mountains. There are many attractions including the shipwreck, Venetian castle, museums and much more.
The two most famous museums are the Byzantine Museum and the Museum of Solomos and Kalvos both of which are located in the town of Zakynthos.
The Byzantine Museum has many interesting exhibits but is renowned for its paintings by famous Zakynthians from the 12th to the 18th century. The Solomos Museum and Kalvos include personal handmade items of these famous Zakynthians.
Another interesting museum is the museum dedicated to Gregory Xenopoulos, the famous poet and playwright. The museum houses many of his personal objects, manuscripts and furniture. On the outskirts of Zakynthos town, in Bochali is the Naval Museum, famous for its collection of Byzantine vessels worldwide.
In the District of Alykes, in the village Pigadakia is the Vertzagio Museum. You can travel back in time more than 200 years and see what life was like as the museum has a reconstruction of a traditional Zakynthian house, decorated with original furniture, antiques, old clothes, old money and elegant pieces. You can also discover within the grounds the traditional stone oven and old agricultural machinery used by the villagers.
The museum can be visited by the local ‘trainaki’ (village train) which departs twice daily from Alykes and Alykanas or if you prefer you can walk as it is about 2km away from Alykes.
